El pasado día 12 de mayo algunos miembros de AEGEE-Bilbao y otros 16 estudiantes de intercambio fuimos al castillo de Butrón. No a visitarlo, a pesar de ser un castillo de “cuento de hadas”, sino porque desde allí salíamos para descender la ría en canoas.
Last may the 12 some AEGEE-Bilbao members and other 16 foreign students went to Butrón castle. Not to visit it, despite it being a “fairy tale” castle, but because we were going to descend the river in canoes.
Tras unos tensos momentos, en los que más de uno pensó que se iba a ahogar, empezamos a remar ría abajo. Por supuesto, en cinco minutos ya se habían formado el grupo “lento” y el grupo “rápido”. La bajada fue muy tranquila, disfrutando del bonito paisaje, remando plácidamente… Hasta que alguien empezó a salpicar a los demás con el remo.
Entonces se desató la guerra. Más de uno terminó calado hasta los huesos, incluso uno de los monitores de Troka Abentura que nos acompañaba recibió su merecido. Pero la cosa no terminó allí, ya que algunos valientes piratas se atrevieron a volcar las canoas de los demás, tirándolos al agua (y, en ocasiones, cayendo ellos también). Más de una canoa terminó panza arriba ¡¡más de seis veces!!
Al llegar a la desembocadura de la ría en Plentzia, desembarcamos y nos dimos un baño allí mismo, en la fría y salada agua. La pelea continuó en forma de aguadillas para algunos…
Después de una necesaria ducha, fuimos a comer al pinar de Gorliz. Aunque nuestra intención era organizar una barbacoa y, quizá, subir al faro, el mal tiempo nos lo impidió. Nos tuvimos que conformar con comernos unos bocatas, eso sí, en muy buena compañía.
Un fin de semana de estos iremos al faro de Gorliz, haremos una barbacoa en el pinar y pasaremos el día en la playa. ¡Os mantendremos informados!

After the first scary moments, when more than one thought they would drown, we started rowing down the river. Of course, in five minutes there were already a “slow” group and a “fast” group. Everyone was very calm and quiet, enjoying the nice landscape, rowing peacefully… Until someone started splashing the others with the oar.
Then the war was unleashed. More than one ended up wet to the bones, even one of the Troka Abentura instructors escorting us got what he deserved. But the thing didn’t end there, as some brave pirates dared to try to flip other canoes, throwing other people to the water (and, sometimes, getting wet themselves). More than one canoe ended upside down more than six times!!
When we got to the river mouth in Plentzia, we landed and had a bath right there, in the cold salty water. The fight went on as duckings for some…
After a much needed shower, we went to have lunch in Gorliz pinewood. Although our intention was to make a barbeque and maybe going to the lighthouse, the crappy weather prevented us from it. We settled for some sandwiches in a very good company.
One of these weekends we will go to Gorliz lighthouse, will do a barbeque in the pinewood and spend the day at the beach. We will keep you posted!
